The Greek MEP with the New Democracy, Fredis Beleris, was elected second representative in the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament.

Mr. Beleris took the position of vice-president with the cross-party support of the other members of the Commission, but also the decisive contribution of the Head of the ND Eurogroup, Mr. Elizas Voseberg.

All 20 standing committees of Parliament, all four sub-committees, hold their constituent meetings on Tuesday to elect their chairmen and vice-chairmen.

A committee presidium (chairman and up to four vice-chairmen) is elected for a term of two and a half years. Committees deal with legislative proposals, appoint negotiating teams to hold talks with EU ministers, approve reports, hold hearings and scrutinize other EU bodies and institutions.

H Eliza Woseberg she will be the chairperson of the Committee on Transport and Tourism in the European Parliament, as she received 33 votes.

In her speech after her election, Mrs. Voseberg thanked her colleagues on the one hand, and on the other hand, she placed special emphasis on Greek interests, especially on shipping.

“I thank my colleagues from the bottom of my heart for honoring me with their trust and electing me today by an overwhelming majority as President of the Committee on Transport, Tourism and Shipping of the European Parliament” stressed the ND MEP.

The MEP of SYRIZA Elena Kountoura takes over as third vice-chair on the same committee as Mrs. Woseberg.

During the week we are going through, the election of the presidency and the constitution of the committees continues, and from September the meetings of the committees in the EP will start normally.

Mr. Beleris made the following statement:

“I thank my colleagues for my election as Vice-President of the Petitions Committee, which I was informed about through the Albanian prisons.

It is a great honor and an even greater responsibility for a newly elected MEP, but also for our country.

Soon my adventure will end and I will be able to carry out the tasks entrusted to me by the Greek citizens with their vote.”
