Constantinople, Manolis Kostidis

The Turkish media made provocative claims on Friday about the tension set up by Ankara in front of Kasos. Turkey appears to have attempted to take advantage of the Italian ship’s investigations in order to challenge Greek sovereign rights, cancel the demarcated Greek EEZ under the Greek-Egyptian agreement and consolidate the Turkish-Libyan memorandum.

“Greece recognized our continental shelf” and “we gave Greece a license in the Eastern Mediterranean” is typically mentioned in Turkish headlines. “Greece, which tried in every way to make the world accept its claim that the continental shelf in the Aegean is 12 miles, was faced with an unexpected situation in the Eastern Mediterranean,” the Turkish media also report, citing sources from the Turkish Ministry of Defense .

The provocative headlines come in the wake of the reports of Turkey’s National Security Council on the Cyprus, Aegean and Mediterranean Seas which met under the chairmanship of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

With reference to the developments in the Aegean and the Mediterranean, in the seventh paragraph of the announcement it is noted that during the meeting of the Turkish National Council: “It was emphasized that our constructive approach, which prioritizes dialogue on the issues of the Aegean and the Mediterranean, will not allowed to be exploited and pointed out that the uncompromising practice of defending our rights and interests will continue.

The issue of the Turkish-Libyan memorandum was mentioned on Thursday by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, confirming Turkish intransigence.

Türkiye Gazetesi: “Recognize our continental shelf”

“We gave Greece a license in the Eastern Mediterranean. Greece, which was laying cables in the sea with an Italian ship in Turkey’s Maritime Jurisdiction Zone, took a step back when it found our navy in front of it. Athens, which requested permission from Ankara for the work, was forced to recognize our continental shelf.”

Athens recognized our continental shelf

Greece requested Turkey’s permission in the Eastern Mediterranean

Greece, which tried its best to get the world to accept its claim that the continental shelf in the Aegean is 12 miles, was faced with an unexpected situation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Greece, which wanted to illegally cooperate with Italy in Turkey’s Zone of Maritime Jurisdiction, was forced to ask Ankara for permission when it found the Turkish navy in front of it. With the permission granted, Athens, which does not accept Turkey’s maritime jurisdiction and acts in violation of international laws in the Aegean, was forced to recognize Turkey’s maritime jurisdiction.

Regarding the Italian-flagged ship, the sources of the Ministry of National Defense stated the following: “On July 22, the ship in question was warned not to enter our Maritime Jurisdiction Zone and was blocked by our ships. Later, as a result of the coordination that took place, it was given permission to perform operations at the designated coordinates and left our continental shelf, completing its activity under the escort of the ships of our Naval Forces.”

Hurriyet: “Step from Athens ‘This is yours’ / Historic granting of permission from Ankara to Athens during the crisis in the Aegean”

“The Italian and Greek ships received permission from Turkey to lay cables on the seabed.

The tension in the Aegean ended with Greece’s request for permission from Turkey. Greece’s request for permission led to comments that it recognized Turkey’s maritime jurisdiction.

The short-lived tension with Greece in the Aegean brought about a historic step. The Greek authorities requested permission from Ankara for the activities of the cable-laying ship. The historic permit request was interpreted as Greece’s acceptance of maritime jurisdictional zones.

While relations between Turkey and Greece have recently entered a normalization process, this week there was a short-lived tension between the two countries in the South Aegean. Greek vessels and an Italian-flagged ship attempted to enter Turkey’s maritime jurisdiction without permission in the context of the submarine cable project between Crete and ‘E/K DNK’. Ankara responded to this move by Athens by deploying five warships in the area. Thus, they prevented the vessels in question from entering Turkish maritime jurisdictional zones.

REQUEST FROM GREECE

As tension escalates in the region, a step has come from Greece to de-escalate the tension. The Greek authorities requested permission from Ankara for the activities of the cable-laying vessel. This historic request for permission was interpreted as Greece’s acceptance of the maritime jurisdiction zones established by Turkey’s agreement with Libya in 2019. This step by Athens, which respects Turkish maritime jurisdiction zones, prevented the escalation of the crisis between of the two countries.

OUR INTERNATIONAL RIGHTS

In addition, T/Diplomatic sources said: “The recent harassment of Turkish fishermen by Greek Coast Guard vessels in the Aegean, the increase in migrant pushbacks and attempts to violate Turkish territorial waters around Imia constitute a worrying picture. On the other hand, we continue to defend Turkey’s rights under international law on the ground and through diplomatic channels.”

SHORT FLIGHT TO TRIPOLI

A development in air transport coincided with developments at sea. Libyan Airlines has announced that the airspace of Greece and Malta has started to be used for Istanbul-Tripoli flights. By using European airspace, which was closed to Libyan aircraft many years ago due to the Libyan civil war, the Istanbul-Tripoli flight was reportedly shortened by about an hour to 2.5 hours.”
