The new commander of Mount Athos was assumed by the Honorary Chief of the GES and former Minister of National Defense General Alcibiades Stefanis, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is noted that Mr. Stefanis succeeds Anastasios Mitsialis, who took office in December 2023.

“It is announced that the Honorary Ambassador Mr. Anastasios Mitsialis has resigned from the position of Commander of Mount Athos. The new Commander is assumed by the Honorary Chief of GES and ex-Minister of National Defense General Alcibiades Stefanis”.

Who is the new Governor of Mount Athos?

Alcibiades Stefanis (October 7, 1959) is a Greek politician, retired general of the Hellenic Armed Forces. He served as Chief of the Army General Staff from 2017 to 2019.

From 2019 to 2021 he served as Deputy Minister of National Defense and from 2022 to 2023 Advisor on Critical Areas and Mount Athos, in the Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis. From May 26 to June 27, 2023, he served as Interim Minister of National Defense in the interim government of Ioannis Sharma.

In the Local Government Elections of October 2023, he was a candidate for Northern Aegean Regional Governor with New Democracy.
