With “respect and gratitude”, New Democracy bids farewell to the party’s historic leader and former deputy director general of the ND, Theodoros Behrakis, who passed away at the age of 81.

In a statement, ND emphasizes:

“The New Democracy family says goodbye with sadness and special emotion to Theodoros Behrakis. He was born in 1943 in Athens, originally from Mani and studied civil engineering at the National Technical University of Athens. In 1968 he was arrested for his anti-dictatorship activity and imprisoned. In 1974, after the restoration of the Republic, was prefect of Karditsa.

In addition to his long-term contribution to New Democracy, during the presidency of Constantinos Mitsotakis he served the party he loved so much as Deputy General Director, with responsibility for organization and political planning (1990-1993).

He was elected municipal councilor of Athens in the municipal elections of 2002 and 2006 and President of the Municipal Council in both of his terms. From February 23 to December 31, 2006 he was the Mayor of Athens.

Theodoros Behrakis was a great man and a fighter of the faction, who stood out for his ethics, consistency and combativeness. We say goodbye to him with respect and gratitude for all that he offered. To his family we express our deepest condolences.”
