Minister of State Akis Skertsos gave an answer to what is being said about the minimum wage in our country, compared, in fact, to that in Bulgaria.

“Unfortunately, some people still underestimate the intelligence of the citizens so much and try to make politics with lies by making it black and white with fake news that supposedly salaries in Greece are even lower than in Bulgaria. That is, from the country which, according to Eurostat, is the EU member state with the lowest minimum wage”, he says by way of introduction and adds:

“Instead of statistical paradoxes, those who are interested should take a look at the minimum wage table regularly updated by Eurostat, with the latest update in July this year (2024).

There they will find two things:

– Firstly, that the minimum wage in Bulgaria is 477 euros/month (on a 12-month basis) while in Greece it is 968 euros/month (on a 12-month basis) or 830 euros/month (on a 14-month basis). Bulgaria has the lowest statutory minimum wage in the EU.

– The second thing they will find is that Greece, thanks to the better course of the economy and the increases given to the minimum wage from 650 to 830 euros/month, is in 11th place among the 22 European countries that have a statutory minimum wage. That is, right in the middle.”

Then, ‘A. Schertsos concludes: “Obviously we are still not satisfied with the level of wages and incomes in our country. And this is the objective of the applied economic policy which reduces taxes and increases investment, to bring incomes closer to European levels by the end of the current term.

And one more thing: instead of the opposition spreading fake news that is not based on reality, let it tell us its own plan on how to increase wages”, concludes the post of the Minister of State, who in closing also refers to the relevant eurostat link : https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Minimum_wage_statistics#General_overview
