For PASOK, the “counter” resets to zero as of today. 214,000 came to the polls setting a new stage. Nikos Androulakis with his comfortable dominance has a “second chance” which is now “golden” for two reasons.

With SYRIZA being “unleashed” he will be asked to play the role of the leader of the official opposition. Whether this is done informally, based on the opinion polls that will give him a clear advantage over SYRIZA, or formally if independence of MPs is actually recorded in Koumoundourou.

At the same time, in contrast to 2021, he does not have a government with the dynamics of the first four years. He has been “caught” by the European elections and certainly the fatigue of the electorate favors him to appeal to center-right voters. After all, he got the largest percentage of the public who had preferred Pavlos Geroulanos and Anna Diamantopoulou in the first ballots.

The fact that Haris Doukas prevailed with great comfort was considered by many to mean that last night was largely a personal defeat of the mayor of Athens who failed to threaten him and show that he is the “new thing that is coming”.

It is recalled that in the second round in 2021 Nikos Androulakis had recorded a percentage of 67.17% and what he managed yesterday was to significantly restrain his strength. Did Haris Doukas burn political capital? He did not show any dynamism, he did not convince that he can have “two watermelons under the same armpit” and possibly it cost him that he “turned a blind eye” in cooperation with SYRIZA. He may now emphasize his key role in order to boost his profile.

The question is what will be the relationship between the two men in the next period and whether Haris Doukas will be able to maintain the role of “number two” in the party with the 40% he registered.

Nikos Androulakis

What helped Nikos Androulakis a lot is the exemplary electoral process that took place in PASOK, which quickly went to the polls on its own initiative after the “murmur” that existed from the result of the European elections. The changes he will make to the party and to the persons who will surround him will be pivotal, as will the role that Pavlos Geroulanos will have from now on, as well as Anna Diamantopoulou, who returned dynamically to Harilaou Trikoupis. For the former Commissioner, the impression that exists is that she came to stay, bringing back people who had recently moved away from PASOK. It is estimated that the Political Committee that will be formed should represent the new political anthropogeography and now Nikos Androulakis will be called upon to synthesize different trends within the movement with an eye towards the New Democracy.
