He has been “caught” by the European elections and certainly the fatigue of the electorate favors him to appeal to center-right voters. After all, he got the largest percentage of the public who had preferred Pavlos Geroulanos and Anna Diamantopoulou in the first ballots.
The fact that Haris Doukas prevailed with great comfort was considered by many to mean that last night was largely a personal defeat of the mayor of Athens who failed to threaten him and show that he is the “new thing that is coming”.
It is recalled that in the second round in 2021 Nikos Androulakis had recorded a percentage of 67.17% and what he managed yesterday was to significantly restrain his strength. Did Haris Doukas burn political capital? He did not show any dynamism, he did not convince that he can have “two watermelons under the same armpit” and possibly it cost him that he “turned a blind eye” in cooperation with SYRIZA. He may now emphasize his key role in order to boost his profile.
The question is what will be the relationship between the two men in the next period and whether Haris Doukas will be able to maintain the role of “number two” in the party with the 40% he registered.
