Diplomatic mobility is observed again in the Cyprus region. Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom are attempting informal talks under the auspices of the UN
Confidence-building measures and the involvement of the guarantor powers of Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom in an informal dialogue on the Cyprus issue include the next phase of the UN’s actions to restart the process after the failure of the special envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Maria Angela Orgin lead to the resumption of dialogue.
Last night’s dinner of the two Cypriot leaders Nikos Christodoulidis and Ersin Tatar with Antonio Guterres in New York resulted in the agreement of the two sides to hold informal meetings in the immediate future with the participation of the guarantor powers. According to diplomatic sources, the involvement of the guarantor forces will take the form of an informal quadripartite meeting with representatives of Greece and Turkey. The meeting is timed after Hakan Fidan’s visit to Athens on November 8.
MOE with barrage opening
Christodoulidis and Tatar also agreed to discuss the opening of new roadblocks for the free movement of citizens. According to diplomatic sources, the Turkish leader requested the opening of the roadblock in Mia Milia (northeast of Nicosia) with Nikos Christodoulidis to request an opening in Pyroi (north of Larnaca) or in Kokkina (at the western end of the island) areas of interest for E/K.
As it turns out, the Cypriot train is being tried to be put back on the tracks through MOE, as happened in all the previous attempts to break the deadlock and remove the impasse. In his statements to journalists after the end of the meeting, President Christodoulidis expressed his satisfaction. “Let’s keep the two positives, that this informal effort will continue. I hope the dialogue in relation to the opening of the roadblocks will bring results”, said the Cypriot President.
