The big appointment at the beginning of the new year will be with the election of the President of the Republic – Budget and Greek-Turkish in the political foreground
By Antonis Anzoletou
The 14 independent MPs who have already left their parties, the split of SYRIZA that many have discounted, PASOK’s new role as a “potential” official opposition, but above all important political appointments coming up in the next period are expected to further reshape the political scenery. The budget battle in Parliament will not be bloodless. The geography in the Plenary may have changed, as – unexpectedly – the elections will have been completed in SYRIZA with the appointment of the new leader. PASOK will now try to show that it is the second force and that it has returned as a pole of power. In any case, the conflict for the emergence of the main opponent of the majority will be fierce. The conflict will also include the smaller parties that feel threatened by the information that talks about changing the electoral law and raising the threshold for entering the Parliament.
In simple words, the leading bill will be the event before the end of the year that will highlight the main political “players”. Will Nikos Androulakis prevail against the new leader of SYRIZA? Will there be some informal alliance of opposition forces against the government with “adhesive glue” accuracy in the market? In any case, the catalyst for the developments will be the situation that will prevail in Koumoundourou in about a month and a half from now.
After his date Giorgos Gerapetritis with Hakan Fidan on November 8 in Athens (possibly followed by a second one), the Greece-Turkey High Cooperation Council will be held in Ankara. With the main dispute being the maintenance of “calm waters”, the question is whether Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Tayyip Erdogan will be able to proceed with the “difficult issues” that have to do with the Exclusive Economic Zone. The “package” solution for The Hague favored by the Turkish side does not give much hope. It is certain that the Greek-Turkish outcome will also have an impact on the internal political scene, as the opposition forces are waiting for the government in the “corner”, while there are “murmurs” inside the New Democracy as well.
The big appointment at the beginning of the new year will be given with his election President of the Republic. His decisions Kyriakou Mitsotakis they will be crucial in the first place for whether Katerina Sakellaropoulou’s term will be renewed or not. The “scale” does not seem to close during her stay in the Presidential Palace. The “no” of Nikos Dendias in the interview he granted to “Kathimerini”, with rumors recently that he is being scouted for the top state position, blurred the landscape to a certain extent. The prime minister wishes to keep the balance within himself and this means that there are no leaks among the 156 MPs who have the majority. The nomenclature gives and takes, while political maneuvers for a person from the wider center-left do not seem to be possible. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as is natural, does not open his papers by promoting respect for the institution.
