The disparaging attitude of Albania – a candidate country for joining the EU – towards the European Parliament and the protection of diplomatic missions, the MEP of the New Democracy, Fredis Beleris, denounces, after the attack he received outside the building of the Albanian Parliament, as part of a visit delegation of the European Parliament to control Albania’s EU accession process.

Fredis Beleris, who is a member of the European Parliament delegation for the EU-Albania Parliamentary Committee on Stabilization and Association and is taking part in the four-day (October 28-31) mission of ten MEPs to Tirana, made the following statement:

“The hatred that Mr. Rama has been cultivating for so long towards me and the members of the Greek ethnic minority in Himara can no longer not be manifested.

Unfortunately, accession candidate Albania is today showing disdain towards a leading European institution of which it wants to become a member. But also discrediting the international conventions it has signed for the protection of diplomatic missions. I spent 16 months in an Albanian cell, these attacks cannot bend my mind. Albania must prove that it wants and should be in Europe. This cannot be done if it does not heal the open wounds in the Republic and its rule of law, but also if it does not respect the rights of our national minority”.
