The attack on the ND and EPP MEP, Fredis Beleris, during his exit from the Albanian Parliament, as part of an official mission of the European Parliament Delegation for the EU-Albania Joint Parliamentary Stabilization and Association Committee, is unanimously condemned by the ND Eurogroup, according to with a statement issued by the head of the ND MEPs, Eliza Voseberg.

As it is reported, “during the profanity and egg and yogurt attack by a protester against Mr. Fredis Beleris, there was an obvious absence of any form of state protection, which could have prevented the attack.”

It is underlined that “according to articles 22 and 29 of the Vienna Convention, the Albanian state, as the host of the mission of the European Parliament, is obliged to ensure the protection of all participants of the diplomatic mission” and that “the lack of protection measures is a clear violation of the relevant provisions of the Vienna Convention”.

At the same time, it is pointed out that “the Albanian government should proceed immediately after the incident to investigate, identify and arrest the perpetrator of the attack” and that “in this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Albania is called upon to issue a statement of apology to the MEP Mr. Fredis Beleris for the incident and the violation of diplomatic immunity”.

“Taking into account the above, the ND Eurogroup unanimously condemns the attack and emphasizes that the lack of action by the Albanian authorities is not appropriate for a country that is a candidate for EU membership and blatantly violates European principles and values,” the announcement concludes.
