“We are increasing the postponement given to the perpetrator for his apology in cases of domestic violence from 3 to 5 days, where he will be detained”
For the changes in the law on domestic violence that the government is preparing, Deputy Minister of Justice Ioannis Bougas spoke on Tuesday morning, as new provisions are coming that will be filed in the next few days.
As he characteristically stated, “to the question of whether we will extend the time limits of the self-tax, the answer is negative”, pointing out:
“Today when a misdemeanor is committed, meaning we have a misdemeanor crime, the offender can be arrested and brought to court in recognizance on the day the crime is committed and the entire day after. So we will not extend these time limits of the autoforo”.
Asked immediately about this and referring to the statements of the Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis to clarified that when the perpetrator is arrested in the context of the autoforo, he is brought to court to be tried.
“The Court therefore has the possibility to complete the case file or for the perpetrator to prepare his defense, to grant a postponement for 3 days. During this period of three days, the offender can be detained. For cases of domestic violence, we make the three days five days, that is, the postponement can be 5 days from the day he will be brought to court and during this period of 5 days the perpetrator will be detained, precisely so that there are no chances of him attacking and to have events like the ones we experienced a few months ago, where an offender was released and unfortunately we had the tragic end of another femicide”, noted Mr. Bougas.
