The Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, hosted a working lunch for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk.

According to a relevant announcement by the ministry, the challenges and perspectives of immigration policy, both nationally and internationally, were at the center of the discussion. The two interlocutors exchanged views on regional developments, with particular emphasis on the Middle East region, where new migration flows may occur in the future.

The discussion, noted in the relevant announcement, highlighted the need for cooperation and constant vigilance within the framework of the international community. It also reaffirmed the common commitment to promote human rights and strengthen policies that combine security with the humanitarian dimension of migration.

Mr. Panagiotopoulos explained to his interlocutor the strategies implemented by Greece for the management of irregular migration flows, in the context of a balanced and integrated migration policy. In particular, he emphasized that the goal of the Greek state is the effective protection of the European borders, with absolute respect for life and human rights, while at the same time the commitment to the creation of legal immigration routes that meet the needs of the Greek economy was underlined.
