On this day, in 1874, Greece and the Government of Argentina recognized Petros Vasilikos as the first Unpaid Consul of Greece in Buenos Aires
“Greece also focuses on strengthening bilateral economic ties with Argentina“, underlined the Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Gerapetritis, in the presentation of the report “150 years of diplomatic and consular relations of Greece-Argentinian» of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As he pointed out, both countries offer opportunities to increase bilateral trade and investment and there is further scope for developing this cooperation.
The event takes place exactly on the day of the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic and consular relations between Greece and Argentina, that is on November 29.
Like today, in 1874Greece and the Government of Argentina recognized Petros Vasilikos as the first Unpaid Consul of Greece in Buenos Aires, as reported by the Foreign Minister. A similar exhibition to celebrate the same anniversary was held last April in Buenos Aires.
Mr. Gerapetritis pointed out “the strong and multifaceted relations between Greece and Argentina, two countries whose historical course shows many similarities, despite their great geographical distance”.
As he mentioned, both Greece and Argentina gained their independence during the same period of time.
“Since then, and despite the geographical distance that separates them, they have developed a deep relationship of friendship, based on shared democratic values and their commitment to international law.”
He noted that there is a good level of understanding between the two countries, as they have faced similar challenges. The two countries experienced dark political periods, such as dictatorships, almost simultaneously in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as major economic challenges.
“In the context of this multifaceted relationship, we must highlight the invaluable bond that exists between the two countries thanks to the Greek community of Argentina, one of the largest Greek communities in Latin America».
“In recent years, Greece has emphasized the further development of its relations with Latin America“, he underlined.
In this context, he added, “a number of high-level visits have taken place, including that of my predecessor in Buenos Aires, in February 2023. In addition, I would like to recall the very recent visit of the Secretary General of Hellenism Abroad and Public Diplomacy, Mrs. Maira Myrogianni, as well as a delegation of members of the Hellenic Parliament, to Buenos Aires on November 15, 2024».
He also expressed his intention to visit Buenos Aires very soon, with the aim of further deepening relations with Argentina.
“Argentina is among the main partners of Greece, as well as the EU, in Latin America“, he noted. “The two countries share a strong commitment to international law, multilateralism, democracy and, of course, the protection of human rights».
“We also welcome the excellent cooperation within the UN. It is Greece’s intention, during its term in the Security Council, from January 1, 2025, to further cooperate with Argentina, in order for the voice of Latin America to be heard at the United Nations».
“We would also like to express our deep appreciation for the fact that Argentina is now the largest contributor to the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus. With its contribution, Argentina promotes peace in our region and upgrades its role in itn”, he underlined.
“Greece is committed to working with Argentina to deepen our relations and face the challenges of the 21st century, with the aim of a better future based on the common ideas that have inspired our countries since their independence“, he concluded.
