The president of SYRIZA Progressive Alliance, Sokratis Famellos, met in Nicosia with the head of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou.

“The people of Greece and Cyprus have an obligation to find solutions of peace, stability and progress. That is why the relationship between SYRIZA-PS and AKEL is of essential and strategic importance” stressed Sokratis Famellos and added:

“SYRIZA-PS is trying to restore, not only the seriousness and credibility of its action as an opposition, but also to submit an alternative proposal for progressive governance.

We want our societies to live better.

We want Europe to be a place of prosperity and quality of life. We are in a fragile region, with extremely worrying geopolitical developments, linked to all the major issues that remain open because Europe has not resolved them. Because the European political leadership has not responded to its basic obligations. And we let the correct decisions of the United Nations remain on paper.

We will take initiatives together in the European Left to gain credibility in politics. Let’s do what we say. And in the Cyprus issue, this
what we will seek is the fastest possible resumption of discussions from where they stopped in 2017″.

For his part, Stefanos Stefanou, after welcoming Sokratis Famellos to Cyprus, highlighted the cooperation of SYRIZA-PS and AKEL in the European Parliament.

“Such are the situations today in the whole world and especially in Europe, that there is a need for a strong and powerful Left, for a Left that can effectively deal with the anti-popular policies being promoted, in order to manage to coordinate and guide the movement for peace, against wars and to pave the way for a better present and future for the peoples” he noted, among other things, and concluded:

“I am sure that the cooperation between AKEL and SYRIZA-PS will not only continue, but will be strengthened for the benefit of the Left movement, as well as our two countries and our neighbors.”
