For the horrific incident of the torture and sexual abuse of the 16-year-old in its structure Malaccas talk to the Deputy Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Sofia Vultepsi.

As he said, “the area is indeed guarded, there is also a special area for unaccompanied minors. There is security, apparently they had somehow organized it with some secrecy”, while he added:

“The problem with Malacca at the moment is that, while we have a total of 2,588 unaccompanied minors in the country, 1,341, that is more than half, are Egyptians, that is from a country that does not even qualify for asylum. As you know, however, the conditions say that if he enters unaccompanied, he cannot be returned. So, we have a serious problem there and we had to build safe areas inside the camp, to accommodate so many children. These criminals go and take them from poor villages in Egypt, take them to Tobruk, Libya to a big camp where they abuse and beat them, to teach them to abuse and thus join organized crime.”

Answering whether more measures will be taken there, Ms. Vultepsi noted that it is being examined whether the safeguarding is sufficient. “There is supposed to be a whole company that has security day and night, and in the area. He himself was apparently in a big shock and came and reported it many hours later, in the afternoon of the next day” as he said.

“The good thing is that mouths are now being opened and from the community itself there, seeing the shock, more and more witnesses are coming forward.”
