New “shots” against the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, as well as foreign policy – “I will be both combative and present”, he said
At his deletion from New Democracymentioned, as expected, the Antonis Samaras in the context of the conference entitled “Transformation 1974-2024: 50 Years of Greek Foreign Policy”, which takes place on December 12 and 13.
Specifically, he said:I spoil the soup of entitlement, the soup of appeasement, precision, security and the soup of the SW mutation into a River».
At the same time, he launched new shots against the Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Gerapetritis, but also the foreign policy followed by the government, mainly in the Greek-Turkish and Cypriot issues and declared that he will continue to be “present” in the political arena.
“In these 50 years, a lot has happened, a lot has changed and we have experienced shocking upheavals. Greek foreign policy had three distinct approaches. A strictly ethnocentric policy with A. Papandreou and with the example of the unified defense doctrine of Greece-Cyprus. On the other hand, we had a foreign policy that assigned the defense of Greek interests to international law and international organizations, with Kostas Simitis as its spokesperson, and the Madrid and Helsinki agreements as examples. We had the multidimensional foreign policy of Constantinos Karamanlis, which combined the two previous ones while keeping the balances and limits, with the leading example being the country’s integration into the European institutions despite the objections of the opposition”, initially said Antonis Samaras speaking at the Vima conference “Transformation 1974- 2024: 50 years of Greek foreign policy”. The former prime minister said that this multidimensional foreign policy of Konstantinos Karamanlis was served by Kostas Karamanlis and he.
Mr. Samaras noted that the then leaders he met in Europe have nothing to do with today’s leaders. Referring to the era after the collapse of the Soviet Union, he said that it was the triumph of the West which, he said, gave birth to the problematic breakup of the former Yugoslavia, bequeathed us Macedonian and others.
“Years later, I remember Merkel’s German Europe and her punitive mood and lack of vision, with the crisis in our country as a prime example. After they questioned us and we refuted them, in the end they pulled the rug out from under us,” he noted.
“I remember in ’14 when I was president of the EU, I desperately tried to wake up my counterparts about illegal immigration. They pretended not to hear me, I hit a wall. They realized it much later when they paid very dearly for it, when Europe began to lose sight of what was in front of it. And now we see temporary governmentlessness in America, substantial governmentlessness in France and Germany, while the chair of the new British government is already creaking,” he said, among other things. “The vision of political convergence that I lived as foreign minister is now wounded,” he noted and said that the international horizon had never been so dark and Europe so neglected and the West so divided.
Speaking about Turkey, he said that in the face of its aggression, we must have a deterrent policy. “Deterrence is the option of the less powerful when they don’t want to submit,” he noted. “Deterrence requires persuasiveness and credibility. Have the means and show that you are determined to use what you have”, he added while mentioning that true alliances are also needed.
He said that Turkey has opened many fronts that are sometimes successful and sometimes not, but it persists. “It’s definitely going into overdrive, making more enemies than it can handle. We seized this opportunity as a government in 2013 and proceeded to the axis Cyprus – Israel – Greece and then to the other axis Greece-Cyprus-Egypt. A third step was taken, the defense aid agreement between Greece and France in 2022. Greece must claim a new role, energy supply, energy security and energy autonomy of Europe”, he stressed.
The former prime minister said that Turkey is trying to grab everything while being Russia’s energy partner. “How would it be possible for Europe to become independent of Russian gas and at the same time depend on Russia’s partner, Turkey?”, he continued, assessing that Trump’s election also signals a return to hydrocarbons.
He added that Turkey is a protector of Sunni Islamists and that it is blackmailing Europe to send others, noting that “with the election of Trump, it is time to close the borders and begin the repatriation of illegals to their countries of origin, and not to grant asylum so that to present a reduction in flows.”
Mr. Samaras said Israel is finding it is at risk of a new Gaza and Hamas on its northern border. “A regime has fallen in Syria, but the wind has opened and we are celebrating here,” he said.
“Kurdish is now rapidly coming to the fore”, he added and said that we “sign declarations of friendship with Turkey, when it has created new acts against us”.
“I’m asking. Why did the Italian ship inform Turkey about operations in a declared Greek EEZ? Does anyone from the Greek government know if everything is okay? The Turks talk about the demilitarization of our islands and about Greek islands that we allegedly stole from them, but we continue and proclaim our friendship. We declare that the red line is 6 miles outside our islands and we leave out our sovereign rights. This is not deterrence, it is the definition of appeasement. The most humiliating thing was that, while Greece voted the Turkish diplomat as the new secretary general of the OSCE, we elected a devotee of the blue motherland. Greece supported the representative of the occupying power in Cyprus who talks about gray zones and we campaigned for him to be elected”, he continued.
“Is it true that it was Greece that pressured Cyprus to agree to vote for Synerioglou’s candidacy? Everyone understands that it is politically absurd and unnatural for Cyprus itself to vote for its conqueror for security issues”, he added.
Mr. Samaras said that the map of Seville clearly depicts our EEZ and that in 2014 during the Greek presidency he requested the creation of official maps for maritime jurisdiction, which the Commission did after a year and these maps coincide with the map of Seville, now called the E.U. “Instead of making the map our flag, we act like we don’t understand in order not to irritate Turkey, which is asking for joint exploitation, and we are just fearfully playing the delay game,” he said.
“We had calm waters, but in the wind. But we had consecutive Turkish Naftex, the most serious provocation outside of Casso together with very provocative Turkish statements. The calm waters remained calm because they openly challenged us and we looked away. Turkey is trying to enforce the Turkish-Libyan memorandum in practice, demanding and obtaining information from the Italian ship under the threat of the Turkish fleet in conditions of otherwise Greek-Turkish friendship and calm waters. He succeeded in starting the lifting of the American embargo on upgraded f16”, he added among other things.
Mr. Samaras added that since the only difference is the issue of the EEZ, “every now and then what do Gerapetritis and Fidan discuss for hours?”. “It is the foreign minister himself who came out and said that in order to ensure peace with Turkey, let him be called a compromiser. It’s not my conversation, he said it, sending the message that our red lines have now started to fade. A message that only fools can’t understand,” he continued, saying that “that’s why I said this foreign minister should go home.”
The former prime minister also said that “we have left Cyprus in the perspective of a multilateral conference” which, as he said, “is a qualification for recognition of the pseudo-state and leads to the two-state solution”.
Antonis Samaras said that “we have lost our compass”, that “this is not foreign policy” and that “we maintain good neighborly relations with the biggest troublemaker in our region”.
“I am the first to avoid war and that is why I am opposed to the appeasement that usually brings war,” he added.
In a question about his deletion from the ND, Mr. Samaras said, among other things, the following: “I think I’m spoiling the soup of entitlement, accuracy, the middle class, the transformation of ND into a River. It was something predetermined. The history of each of us cannot be erased.”
Regarding his political future, he said that “the ND now looks a little like the faction we know” and that “I will be both combative and present”.
“Because I had very difficult times with the troika, the most difficult I had when I stubbornly refused to give all the property of the Greek state to the super fund, something that was given after Mr. Tsipras for 99 years,” he said at another point in his posting.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, he said that Russia is 100% reprehensible and rightly we went in favor of Ukraine and he added that “we sent Russia into the arms of China and India into the arms of Russia to a large extent” and that “this in foreign policy is called an alliance rivals”. He also stated that “for Cyprus we saw few protests” while “for Ukraine we became perhaps more royal than the king”.
