The 3 countries propose the appointment of a special envoy of the European Union for Syria
Respect for the unity of independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria is proposed, among others, by Greece, Cyprus and Austria, which took an initiative with the aim of promoting an active role of the EU in the region.
According to information, the initiative of the three countries provides:
- Respect for the unity, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.
- A smooth, inclusive, Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political transition in the spirit of UN Security Council Resolution 2254, free from foreign interference, leading to credible, inclusive and non-sectarian governance based on democratic legitimacy, which will fully respects human rights.
- Respect for women’s rights and the rights of all religious minorities and ethnic groups.
- Immediate appointment of an EU Special Envoy for Syria.
- Active presence of EU and MS in Damascus to closely monitor the situation.
- Creation of an EU support mechanism, for the effective implementation of UNSC Resolution 2254(2015), and establishment of a special action group.
- Continuation of fight against terrorism.
- As soon as political conditions permit, the reconstruction of Syria should be a priority, both as a means of restoring the country’s unity and stability, and of securing the prospect of a better future for its people in an inclusive way the citizens.
- The EU has a leading role in establishing an independent body for missing persons.
- Promotion of specific EU-funded projects for the protection of cultural heritage. Cooperation with UN Organizations and international humanitarian partners to support minority groups.
- Priority in EU-funded programs to provide advice on dealing with psychological trauma to minors, preventing and combating sexual and gender-based violence.
- Priority support for voluntary returns.
