The uncertainty in which the EU must move and with regard to immigration was pointed out by the MEP of ND and EPP, Fredis Beleris, during his intervention in the Plenary of the European Parliament.

“Obviously, it’s not the first time it’s been heard in this room,” he said, referring to immigration, clarifying that “it’s – perhaps – the first time that Europe faces so many uncertainties at the same time.”

“I am sure”, he continued, “that we all agree that the fall of the Assad authoritarian regime must be combined with a smooth transition of power, which will ensure respect for the territorial integrity of the country, but also respect for the national and religious communities”. And he added: “In this context, Europe must prepare on two levels: in the creation of conditions, which on the one hand will prevent new migration flows, and on the other hand will strengthen the voluntary return to Syria.”

“I represent one of the countries that immediately suspended the examination of asylum requests from Syrians and we hope that in the future Europe will also acquire faster reflexes,” he said and, concluding, added: “Europe has proven that it has rules. Let’s show that they are there to be respected and it is in the interest of its people.”
