The “journey” of the Greek term in Security Council of United Nations for the two-year period 2025-26 takes shape with the official ceremony of the entry of the New Non-Permanent Members which will take place at the headquarters of the international organization at 19.00 Greek time (12.00 US).
The Permanent Representative to UNAmbassador Evangelos Sekeris together with his counterparts from Denmark, Somalia, Pakistan and Panama will participate in the ceremony, which includes the placing of the flags of the five newly admitted countries to the Security Council next to the flags of the existing members consisting of the five Permanent Members (China, Russia, USA, France, UK) and five more Non-Permanent (Slovenia, Algeria, S. Korea, Guyana, Sierra Leone) whose term ends in 2025.
Her participation Greece in the UN Security Council as a Non-Permanent member gives Greece the opportunity to highlight its diplomatic capital by actively participating in the formulation of decisions on global issues, such as peace, development, security in unstable regions and human rights.
In an environment of multiple global challenges, conflicts and international fluidity, the top priorities of Greece’s participation in the Security Council include the peaceful resolution of disputes, respect for International Law, climate change and security, women, peace and security, the protection of children in armed conflict and maritime security.
Athens’ commitment to these priorities is demonstrated by Greece’s solidarity with Ukraine’s struggle to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as our country’s active policy in the Middle East, in order to limit the humanitarian crisis. Greece will strengthen these priorities through a series of actions and initiatives, which will include the large and critical countries of the planet.
