For “unprecedented and devastating decisions” the Mayor of Athens speaks, Harry Doukasresponding to the President of EDSNA and Deputy Governor of Environment and Quality of Life, Charalambo Siatraregarding the increase in contributions and waste burial fees for Municipalities.

In communication signed by Mr. Siatras, according to which the Region of Attica refutes what the mayor of Athens supported, regarding the increase in waste burial fees by decision of ESDNA, Mr. Doukas answers with numbers and asks “three key questions” about the issue.

The response of the Mayor of Athens in detail

The numbers are relentless. No matter what you claim, no matter how much you say that “it’s not my fault, it’s the government’s fault”.

The Municipality of Athens is asked to pay from 23.9 million. euros in 2024 for contributions and fees to EDSNA (the body that manages waste in Attica), 35.3 million. euros in 2025 for the same services. A burden beyond all logic.

A corresponding charge is recorded in the other Municipalities of the Attica Region.

The President of EDSNA and Deputy Regional Governor of Attica, must answer not only for the unprecedented and exterminating decisions, but for the following three key questions:

  • What is the urgency of the EU decision? of EDSNA on 27/12, which was even taken without the physical presence of its members?
  • Why was there not even a basic dialogue with the Municipalities of Attica?
  • Why was the decision made after their 2025 Budgets had been completed and passed?

I close two points:

First: It is impermissible for the Deputy Regional Governor (who together with the former Deputy Mayor of Mr. Bakoyannis signs the decision) to invoke inadequacy or inability to properly operate and manage the Association he manages, in order to decide on the excessive burdens on the Municipalities.

Second: It is, equally, impermissible to ask the Municipalities of Attica to pay the damages of their own mismanagement to EDSNA, all these years.

We won’t allow it.
