On November 6, 2023, Anna Diamantopoulou, the NETWORK for Reform in Greece and Europe, the Jacques Delors Institute and Reform magazine, with the support of the Delphi Economic Forum, honored the work of former Prime Minister Kostas Simitis who died today.

In the event attended by political leaders and executives from the political life of the country, Bill Clinton, Jacques Delors and Jean-Claude Juncker spoke about Costas Simitis with video messages.

The event held at the “Hellenic World Cultural Center” was graced by the presence of the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

In this speech, Kostas Simitis talked about the changes he wanted to bring to the country’s political life, noting at the same time that “it was not always easy, because there are resistances to change”.

“It is my deep belief, however, that problems are solved with effort. There are two key words: design and timing. You don’t move forward without a plan – without a goal and an implementation plan. You move with the broadest possible consents, but often against the current. It is the price that must be paid, so that the benefit that will be obtained is much greater”, Costas Simitis had emphasized at the time.

The former president of the USA, Bill Clinton said that “I am proud to have served in my office alongside Costas Simitis for five years and to have worked with him”.

In his message, Jean-Claude Juncker described Kostas Simitis as a “courageous politician” and added that he “abhorred compromises that were against his deep convictions”.

Jacques Delors also spoke about Costas Simitis through Pascal Lamy.

For her part, Anna Diamantopoulou, opening the event with her speech, had said about Kostas Simitis “from a revolutionary with a cause during the junta, co-founder and prominent member and leader of PASOK, a heretic with an opinion and creator of the modernizing current”. adding that “the battle for modernization is not over”.

The event was attended by the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Stefanos Kasselakis, the president of PASOK, Nikos Androulakis and personalities from the financial and academic Greek scene, as well as representatives of the youth.
