The processing and examination of the draft law of the Ministry of Tourism has been completed in the competent Standing Committee on Production and Trade of the Parliament “Establishment of specifications for short-term rental properties, environmental classification of accommodation, simplification of the process of establishing tourist businesses and more specific provisions for controlling and strengthening the framework of tourist infrastructuren”
Tomorrow, the draft law of the Ministry of Tourism will be discussed and put to a vote in the Plenary Session of the Parliament.
The Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Olga Kefalogianni, in her intervention emphasized that the bill is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the position of Greece as a top quality destination and that “mwith coordinated efforts and innovative actions, Greece continues to lead the way, offering reliable, safe and quality hospitality servicess”.
He also characterized as costless the criticism made by the opposition, without substantial proposals stating that “despite the fact that the bodies that were invited placed themselves, for the most part, positively on the provisions of the draft law, we find from some colleagues a consequence of no to everything. An inexpensive opposition, apparently for reasons of creating impressions, without actually listening to any improvement proposal».
Regarding the short-term lease, the Minister emphasized that “despite the opposition’s agreement on the need to institutionalize rules, there has been no positive mention of the government’s initiatives to ensure quality and safety in the hospitality sector».
He pointed out that the new provisions serve more broadly to improve the overall tourist experience, and have received positive comments even from international booking platforms.
Environmental responsibility runs horizontally through the bill, the Minister said, both with the introduction of regulation for the classification of tourist accommodation based on environmental performance and the use of seawater in swimming pools, a practice that is already widely applied in the Mediterranean to save water resources.
