“Greece pays costs for the wrong choices Mitsotakis in immigration,” SYRIZA-PS President Socrates Famellos said in a statement following his meeting with Mayor Mytilene.

In particular, Socrates Famellos told the media:

“As part of our visit to Lesvos, I met today with the Mayor of Mytilene. We have come back and have a very good cooperation, based on the deep belief that self -government is both a cell of democracy and a cell of creation. Particularly in the island Greece, municipalities must be reinforced by staff, where there is a serious problem, but also with resources, and serious problems of malfunction created by the government with choices such as the abolition of school committees.

We discussed the major issues of the public and municipal character of water supply, sewerage and waste management, which are at risk of privatization plans and unions promoted by the government, and the great issue of energy costs that also afflict municipalities. In terms of local issues, we have prioritized the acceleration of the swimming pool, which we had started before and is a priority. And it is very important that the project is proceeding. But also in the work of the South bypass, which was also launched under the SYRIZA government and is delayed, with serious responsibilities of the government. On the part of SYRIZA-PS we will push in particular so that this work of southern bypass and entry into Mytilene can proceed.

We also discussed the recent announcements of the Minister of Migration and Asylum. I will tell you about our view, because the mayor is also entitled to the municipal authority to be positioned with their ethics and autonomy. I believe that the minister’s recent oral statements prove to be how hypocritical and failing the New Democracy policy was in migration, which took advantage of the anxiety of the citizens and even spread false prospects.

The recent position for the operation of two high-income in Lesvos is a proof of the failure of the New Democracy and Mr Mitsotakis personally, but it is also a serious mistake and we are opposed to this announcement. It is linked to the large deficit of immigration policy, which the government has also made in the European negotiation with the Migration Pact, which unfortunately Greece pays for these wrong choices as well.

SYRIZA’s view is that here in Lesvos there is a small structure, which will be a center of reception, identification and receipt and management of asylum efficiency. And neither of the two megae, which are currently operating or constructed, should not work. In Bastria we have an economic and environmental scandal, which is also responsible for ministers and must be checked. And the Mega-Domin, which operates next to the city, in Mavrovouni Kara Tepe, cannot be a prospect for the local community, nor is it obviously an honor for Greece or more generally for European culture.

These are the results of Mr Mitsotakis. It constantly removes us from the European acquis, but also from the characteristics of a country that can boast about its operation“
