The Minister of Family and Social Cohesion is attended by the 69th Committee on Women’s Committee on Women’s Status. Sofia Zacharaki.

This is the UN week dedicated to the woman during which a number of actions and events take place.

This session marks the 30th anniversary of the emblematic Declaration and Action Platform of Beijing of 1995which is an integrated political agenda for women’s strengthening and gender equality.

The focus of the session is the review and evaluation of the implementation of Beijing Declaration and its contribution to the achievement of the agenda 2030 for sustainable development. At the start of the session, the Secretary -General of the UN, Antonio Guterresstressed the urgent need to tackle the regression to women’s rights, stating that ‘Whatever conquered with trouble, it is neglected’while pointing out the revival of patriarchal perceptions that prevent progress.

Mrs Zacharakis spoke to RES-EIA about her participation in the UN Committee meeting on women’s status:

“This is the first time we have come to this multi -day event and it is also the first time we have been represented at minister level. This year it has a very important anniversary, the 30th anniversary of Beijing’s iconic Declaration, which was a very important moment, on which some foundations were laid on which the states convened and co -signed. In our country we have seen a lot of progress. I will mention it in the interventions I will do for the position of the woman, but without saying that we have reached the ideal point. Because we see that unfortunately, prejudices and stereotypes are still well held. But it is very important that we have a very solid legislative framework.

Our country is considered one of the few countries that have progress, by 2022 was one in 12 countries that had full legal equality in their legal arsenal and this is very important. Some time ago – which I will transfer to the placements I will do in the UN we have also adopted a European directive to increase the number of women on the boards of the listed companies, while we are already trying and constantly taking measures to protect the victim who is usually a woman in her workplace. He feels. There are men who are experiencing it, but it is mainly the woman in cases where she feels the threat. We are interested in being able to grow up at the point we want and as everyone wants to capture it. He may be at home, he may be at work, he may be in society anywhere without threatening an environment where anyone can develop their personality and this is my main message. That we rely on value, skills and the full development of all our features, our strong points without anyone stopping us. This is what I think was very strongly transferred to the United Nations and the Plenary of the General Assembly, as UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres said “unfortunately there are many retreats to the rights”.

“There are too many countries that we see that women, instead of being able to progress, are currently more oppressed and a significant retreat in their rights. So we are here to speak in a loud voice to support women who are more in need and back in our countries to be able to get the best practices we may have seen in another country. For example, some practice of strengthening young girls. Because the change comes mainly from an early age. How do we teach our children to play together, learn, claim, or how to see the team without seeing the sex issue, but to see all the other features that build a dynamic. We focus very much on this.

I also participated in a very important parallel meeting with the committee chaired by Mr. Roussopoulos, we talked about the position of women in politics. It was found that women’s participation rates in politics are low. We talked with many shared experiences with many representatives from too many countries, close and distant with similar challenges. Essentially this week we celebrate all that we have achieved, we are concerned about all the retreat that may exist and point out all that needs to be done. ” Mrs Zacharakis said.

Mrs Zacharakis also referred to Greece’s participation in the United Nations Security Council as ‘National Pride’. He also explained that the Ministry of Family and Social Cohesion together with the General Secretariat for Equality and Rights are working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strengthen women in crisis management.

“I am glad that both my ministry and the General Secretariat for Equality and Rights is involved with the Foreign Ministry in the part of women’s empowerment, especially in crisis management, in the battle and management of all the impacts of the major crises, such as the population and the population, which is affected by the population and the population and the population. It is something that we really help so that it is imprinted in our positions in texts, but also mainly by taking initiatives.

As for Greece’s participation in the Security Council, we are very proud that we will be involved in this important UN for peace and security during these two years, I am glad that our permanent delegation to the UN with a lot of staff, but also with new people who do their practice here. It has been strengthened by foreign ministry officials and administrative staff and this means that we have placed great emphasis and too much energy. Thank you very much to the permanent delegation and ambassador Mr. Sekeris and the diplomats of the delegation who organized the stay of the Greek Ministry delegation of the Ministry who has the special honor of leading and I believe that it will be two years very essentially that Greece is making it even more powerful. This is crucial and in relation to other countries on very basic issues that we can sometimes lose in Greek, but are they what will form the future for our children? ‘So it’s much closer to us than what we may probably believe in »Ms Zacharakis said.
