The Commission’s policy of approaching Turkey was criticized by SYRIZA MEP Nicolas Farantouris, following the arrest and detention of Mayor Constantinople Ekrem Imamoglou.

Speaking on Wednesday at the joint meeting of the Security and Defense Committee and the Committee on the European Shield of Republic in the presence of Commissioner Hena Virkounen, Mr. Farantouris noted that the detention of the Mayor of Constantinople proves the lack of democracy.

“Do we want a safe and autonomous Europe and employ Turkey for Europe’s security and defense? Are we talking about shielding democracy and electoral processes from third countries and invite Turkey to European security conferences? “ The MEP asked.

It is, he recalled, for a country with obvious anti -democratic, aggressive, review and authoritarian behavior.

In this context, Mr Farantouris has now called for Turkey’s exclusion from every aspect of Europe’s security and defense architecture.
