His support for Constantinople Mayor Ekrem Imamoglou was expressed by a post on the X Platform, the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, in which he also attaches a photo of their meeting.

The mayor of Athens characterizes the detention of Imamoglou a serious blow to democracy and human rights and stresses that “we have a duty not to remain silent”.

He said he has requested that support resolution be issued by the plenary of the European Committee of Regions, while stressing that together with the mayor of Paris Ann Indalgo and 12 other mayors have signed a declaration calling for the immediate release of Mayor Constantinople.

In detail the post of Harry Duke:

“Exhale, you’re not alone.

The detention of Ekrem Imamoglu is a serious blow against democracy and human rights.

We have a duty not to remain silent.

In my letter to the Bureau of the European Socialist Party (PES) of the European Commission of the Regions, I call for a relevant support resolution by the European Committee of the Regions.

Also, together with the Mayor of Paris Ann Indalgo and 12 other mayors we have signed a proclamation with which we call on the Turkish authorities:

* Release the Mayor of Constantinople and the other opposition officials arrested for political reasons.

* Stop all judicial prosecutions, as well as political pressure and attacks on local government.

* Respect democratic freedoms and human rights in Turkey.

Athens supports similar initiatives of the B40 and Eurocities.

The mayors all over Europe are joining forces! “
