The new rules that will apply to road safety have been announced today by the Commission.

The changes are both in the form of a driving license, which is digitized, as well as in their essence, especially for the new drivers, who are put into two years of surveillance.

More specifically, the changes decided on:

1) Driving licenses accessible to smartphones

2) Minimum two -year test period for new drivers

3) 18 -year -old drivers will be able to drive trucks under certain conditions.

Driver’s digital license

A digital driving license available on a digital wallet smartphone across the EU, will become the main form in the EU, according to new rules. “Member States will have five years and six months from the entry into force of the new rules to implement it,” according to the Commission.

Two years under test the new drivers

For the first time, EU rules will set a test period of at least two years for new drivers. Beginner drivers will be subject to stricter rules and sanctions for driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without using seat belts or children’s protection systems.

At the same time, “to mitigate the lack of professional drivers, the minimum age with which a driver can obtain a truck driver will be reduced from 21 to 18 years and for a bus driving license from 24 to 21 years, provided that the applicant has a certificate of professional competence. EU countries can allow 17 -year -olds to drive a truck or truck on their territory only if they are accompanied by an experienced driver. “

Following the approval by the European Parliament and the Council and the publication of the decision, the Member States will have four years to transfer the directive to their national law.

Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, stressing that “these updated driving licenses mark a significant step forward to modernize the driving licenses and enhancing road safety to the new EU. A more affordable, effective and safer mobility system. Most importantly, it will help us reduce deaths on the streets of the EU. “
