“We are looking for a commonly accepted solution to fishermen’s issues respecting Community decisions,” the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food said, ”
The meeting of the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, Christos Kella, and the Secretary General of the Ministry, George Stratakos, was held in a positive atmosphere. The meeting was a continuation of previous contacts and was characterized as particularly constructive, aiming to find a solution to an issue that concerns not only Greece, but the whole European south.
More specifically, among the issues that have arisen according to the industry professionals is the implementation of a Community Directive on the digitization of the fishing, which provides that fishermen should have certified scales on their boats and weighing specific ways.
In addition, it will be mandatory to have a fishware for each species of fish while professionals should have the papers of daily weighing 3 years and inside the boats.
According to the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, all this is related to the implementation of a Community Regulation, in which a National Monitoring Plan has been activated.
According to the ministry through informal information if our country had not adapted to these claims, it would be confronted with sanctions by the European Court of Justice.
“On the one hand we are working to comply with the European Regulation, as we are required, and on the other hand we want to have our fishermen satisfied,” Mr Kellas said, adding, “We are looking for a commonly accepted solution, respecting Community decisions. It seems the proposals submitted by the ministry are close to them, which our fishermen claimed, and next week we are waiting for their answer. “
For his part, the president of the Aegean Association, Vangelis Arapakis, pointed out that the Association submitted the views of its members, which coincide greatly with those of the Ministry. “We will receive them in writing in the coming days, process them and from what we see, according to what we have heard, the issue will end,” he said.
“There was partly a very good understanding and cooperation with the ministry. We are waiting for a clarification to be all satisfied, “said Nikolaos Stamoulos, President of the Union of Coastal Fishermen Owners.
