Mitsotakis: We need a structured European response to energy

by

Mr.Mitsotakisnoted that the issue of energy will be discussed tomorrow, Friday, stressing that “it is absolutely clear that the crisis in Ukraine has very important effects at world energy pricesin prices natural gas and of course at its prices electric power».

In detail, his statement Prime Minister as follows:

“We will have the opportunity, in a little while, with his presence President Biden to discuss the latest developments in Ukraine. Let us reaffirm our absolute and strong European unity in the face of this barbaric Russian attack on Ukraine and our support for President Zelensky so that Ukraine can defend itself in the best possible way.

We will also have the opportunity to approve the most important text of Compass Strategy which sets the framework for the European Union’s foreign policy and which includes Greek concerns and concerns about the situation prevailing in Eastern Mediterranean.

Tomorrow morning we will have a very substantive debate on this issue energy. It is absolutely clear that the crisis in Ukraine has a very significant impact on world energy prices, on gas prices and of course at its prices electric power. And this is true for all European citizens and all European companies. All Member States – to the best of their ability – support businesses and households through national budgets.

That, however, will not be enough. You need one structured European reaction. The Greek Government has submitted a proposal regarding the imposition of a ceiling, a ceiling, on gas prices, in the wholesale market, so that in this way the prices of electricity can be compressed. And the wholesale gas market should not be a scapegoat for profiteers, but should meet the real forces of supply and demand.

At the same time, we are defending it need the European Union to be able to natural gas is supplied as a supranational entity and negotiate with gas suppliers as a whole, whether we are talking about pipeline gas or liquefied natural gas, in order to further squeeze prices. That is, to do, in simple words, exactly the same thing we did to him COVID-19 when we bought vaccines as a whole the European Union and did not let the Member States negotiate on their own. In order for this to happen, obviously, all the Member States will have to agree and delegate this responsibility to the European Union. “We will support this position because we believe that in this way we will be able to strengthen our purchasing power and further de-escalate gas prices.”

Thank you very much.
