The amendment by the Chairman of the EU-Turkey Mixed Parliamentary Committee, Manolis Kefalogiannis, which “condemns Turkey for the maintenance of the official threat of war (Casus belli) against Greece in the event that our country exercises its legal and inalienable right to its 12 European Parliament in the Progress Report of Turkey’s accession (2023-2024), as noted in a statement.
“A right, legal and inalienable, in accordance with Article 3 of the United Nations Convention on Sea Law, which has been passed and ratified by 168 countries and is now customary law,” as it is stated.
The voting took place a short time ago in the plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Mr Kefalogiannis’ particular amendment had been adopted and supported by the European People’s Party, the political family to which the New Democracy belongs, and was signed by the rapporteur of the EPP Turkey report on Turkey, Isabel Lima.
The full text of the amendment, as notified by announcement, has as:
“The European Parliament expresses its deep regret that Turkey continues to maintain a formal threat of war against Greece (Casus Belli), if the latter exercised its legal right to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles in the Aegean.”
