The prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited at noon her barrier Plakiotissato Mesara her Cretea project that has remained unfinished for many years and has now been completed, in the context of the wider strategy for completion of important water management infrastructures.

“This project started in 2007 and I am very pleased that in our days the main barrier has been completed and we now have secured funding to proceed with the auction of networks immediately so that we can irrigate about 30,000 acres of productive Cretan land.

And it is just one of the very important projects we are launching in the field of Crete’s water management. Yesterday the relevant contract for the Bramian complex was signed and we have been extensively mentioned in the other large and medium -sized projects.

We attach great importance, with both relevant ministries, to completing a series of half -finished large irrigation projects that are all over the country, because it is really a shame for the Greek taxpayer to have spent many millions of euros, the farmers are waiting for the water to wait.

The Plakiotissa Dam is one such example, how we can quickly catch the thread, solve chronic pending, and hope to get paid soon, help us a little bit and rainfall. We are talking about a large barrier, 18 million cubic meters, which will be able to ensure our farmers anymore that they will need no drilling or other ways to water their fields.

And of course, to say one more thing, that every time we have such a large irrigation work, the very productivity of private land itself is greatly increased. And of course because here the area is the protagonist in the primary sector, what we have to do is secure sufficient water and we will do it, “the prime minister said.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis also emphasized that a holistic waters of Crete was being launched.

The barrier is now in the first phase of filling, with the aim of seamless water supply of about 30,000 acres of land to strengthen the primary sector, which is particularly important for employment and wider economic activity in the region. At the same time, the study of irrigation networks has already been prepared, with the care of the Region of Crete.

The dam will also contribute to better management of Crete’s water reserves throughout the year, as in winter there is a sufficient amount of water, thereby protecting the area and growers from the effects of water scarcity, especially during the summer months.

Earlier, the prime minister went to Peza Heraklion, where he visited the village church and talked to the Mayor of Archanes-Asterousia Manolis Kokosalis and residents, who offered him local products.
