Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis refers to the war in Ukraine, the consequences of the energy crisis and the reaction of Europe in his message for the National Anniversary of March 25, 1821.
He emphasized that the government was already building a first line on the difficulties faced by households due to rising prices, and added that common solutions were needed, with a single European gas market.
The message of the Prime Minister in detail:
My compatriots,
Greeks in every corner of the globe are celebrating, today, the starting point of a course of two hundred and one years of struggle for the progress of the nation. But also the dawn of our third century of independence, which we face with confidence and optimism.
We honor every generation of ancestors. The fighters of 1821, who offered us freedom and a state, on a continent where totalitarianism reigned. But also their successors. Those who raised the homeland and worked hard for its prosperity. All the Greeks, before us, who for decades held the most valuable baton: the command of unity and timeless preemption.
This year we are celebrating the national anniversary with the only certainty being the uncertainty of a war. A fire that ignited again in Europe, staining the borders with blood and leading millions to exile. This is a geopolitical crisis that, along with the cities of Ukraine, is bombarding the international energy market, thus triggering accuracy in all countries and in all products.
In our country the new ordeal breaks out before the pandemic is over. And while successive defensive challenges have preceded, sometimes in Evros and sometimes in the Aegean. At a time, in fact, that Greece was leaving behind the fixation and entering a path of prosperity. We have to stay in it! Using our strength and endurance. So that again an international adventure becomes a national victory.
I am well aware of the difficulties caused by imported prices in every household. That is why the government is already building a first embankment against them. With subsidies on electricity bills and discounts on fuel. In order to absorb part of the increases. By stimulating the income of the weakest. But also with special support measures for businesses and farmers.
But I will not hide the truth: no public treasury of any country can cover the consequences of a global earthquake. It can only limit them. Common problems require common solutions. And that is exactly why I am here at the Summit. For a single European gas market. For the blow of international speculation. And for a joint response to the price rally.
Europe’s reaction is not slow. But until then, I have only one thing to promise: that I will be by the side of every Greek woman and Greek man, exhausting all the margins of our forces. Without, however, exhausting the limits of our possibilities. Because the temporary crisis will find its end. While the route of the place must be continuous and upward. And, most importantly, stable and secure.
My fellow citizens,
The universal ideas of the ’21 uprising cross borders and centuries. Thus, the desire for his freedom then, becomes solidarity with the defenders of Ukraine today. The vision of the Greeks for a modern state is raised again alive in Europe in the face of authoritarian despotism. And the position of the old philhellenic movement is now being taken by a wave of international solidarity.
201 years ago, a struggle started by a few, which many in the world did not believe. And yet he succeeded! We are all called to give the fight of our times together. We are, after all, armed with the lessons that our free state has given birth to: With confidence in our strengths. The cool insight. And the mood to make every obstacle a springboard.
We honor, then, the 25th of March, as the circumstances demand. Turning thinking about the past into dynamism for the present and planning for the future. For a homeland that comes from far away and goes very far.
Happy birthday to Greece and to all Greeks, everywhere in the world!
