The Deputy Minister of National Defense, Athanasios Davakis, described the Memorandum of Understanding with Egypt “yet another proof of Greece’s excellent relationship with the Arab Republic of Egypt”.

As he said, “our relations are at a very good level as early as 2020, when then Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias had signed the EEZ agreement, which is a diplomatic and substantial success in this field.”

“Following this relationship was the current agreement between two historical states of the Eastern Mediterranean,” Mr Davakis added.

According to Mr. Davakis, the main goals of this memorandum are:

-Discending of the Security of Air Force and Maritime Transport in the area,

-the firming bonds with Egypt,

-Strengthening the efforts of the Hellenic Coast Guard, both by technical means and with the existence of a Navy’s link at the Single Rescue Coordination Center of Piraeus,

-Recognition of Greece’s fixed position, regarding the identification of the Greek area of responsibility for the provision of naval research and rescue services with the corresponding aeronautical area.

“It is clear that this Memorandum reinforces, strengthens our relations with Egypt, creates a prosperous prospect of foreign policy in the wider region, a policy that has been constantly and consistently established and practiced by the ND government,” said Davakis.

The chairman of the National Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee, Dora Bakoyannis, in a brief intervention underlined that “the case of research and rescue has been involved in Greece’s foreign policy for many years.”

“Research and rescue issues have a basic humanitarian objective but the areas practiced are sometimes disputed. We have agreed right now and it is good that we are sending our message to the Egyptian Parliament that the Greek Parliament is in agreement. Our relations with Egypt at this time are excellent and it is in the interest of our country to strengthen them to the greatest extent, “Ms Bakoyannis said.

PASOK’s rapporteur, Michalis Katrinis, stressed that “the agreement reinforces the presence of our country in a critical business field and guarantees its role in providing research and rescue services, in collaboration with a strategic partner, such as Egypt.”

“It is an agreement that can contribute to the consolidation of Greek presence in areas systematically disputed by Turkish review policy.

“For the fact that Greece’s responsibility in the fields of Research and Rescue, as defined by the competent international bodies is explicitly recognized, is of particular importance, as the Greek competence in Fir Athens and the area of responsibility of the Piraeus Business Center is shielded, a jurisdiction of us.”

SYRIZA’s rapporteur, George Gavrilos, also appeared as a supporter, describing “the Greek-Egyptian Memorandum of Understanding, as it moves contrary to the line of Ankara and the doctrine of the blue homeland”.

“Turkey’s moves to achieve international recognition and legitimacy, either unilaterally or bilaterally, are illegal,” he said, noting that the signing of the Memorandum if the positive event is not directly concerned with the sovereign rights of our country or the EEZ. “

The KKE specialist, Nikolaos Papanastasis, argued that “the Greek-Egypt Memorandum of Understanding in the fields of aeronautical and naval research and rescue sectors concerns very serious issues that require, better infrastructure, equipment and staffing, good planning and coordination”.

“This is a move that concerns geopolitical choices and the deepening of military cooperation between Greece and Egypt, included in the context of the general cooperation that serves the interests of the monopoly groups, as well as aspirations that move in a Euro -Atlantic direction, in a period that is a period of time.

The special speaker of the Greek solution, Vassilis Viliardos, argued that “the content of the contract has relatively vague provisions such as there is no reference to the implementation of its implementation of equipment”.

“This is an self -evident rescue contract and even in an area covered by the FIR of Athens, but there are many ambiguities in the agreement,” he noted.

New Left Specialist Dimitris Tzanakopoulos stressed that “a key issue when rescue zones are defined is to be able to take not only business but also politically responsibility for it.”

“It is a rather positive development usually when it comes to neighboring research and rescue issues in a friendly way,” he noted.

“The ratification of the Memorandum of Greece – Egypt, for us, is not regarded as a mere technical act but it should be part of a strategic major importance of sovereignty of the country’s national security and geopolitical position in the Eastern Mediterranean. We will closely monitor the implementation of this memorandum, “said NIKIS rapporteur Tasos Economopoulos.

As he said, “the agreement is important because it cancels in practice Turkish aspirations for the blue homeland, recognizes Greek areas of responsibility and deprives arguments from Turkish revisionist propaganda.”

The Special Court of Freedom Freedom, Alexandros Kazamias, acknowledged “the need to expand the cooperation of the two countries in the field of research and rescue”, but referred to over-interpretations given and stressed that it must be clarified that it is not part of the strategic relationship between Greece.
