In his address, the Greek Foreign Minister addressed to the members of the Council of Europe, said the meeting is taking place in a period of deep instability
In the particular critical global context and volatility of the international order, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis referred to his address at the meeting of the Council of Council of Council of Council of Council of Political Affairs and the Republic of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
“It is a special privilege for Greece to host the Committee on Political Affairs and the Republic of the Council of Europe. The Council of Europe has been a guardian of democracy, freedom, human rights and the rule of law in all European countries involved in it, “the Greek Foreign Minister said, adding:” Unfortunately, this meeting takes place in a period of deep volatility, as the basic pillars – collapse. Indeed, one of the most respected pillars – the rule against territorial conquest – was grossly violated when Russia invaded Ukraine, occupying entire areas of the country. “
He then referred to the Russia -Ukraine War noting that “the Council of Europe, just days after the invasion, reacted decisively with Russia’s dismissal from the Organization, confirming that the defense of its basic principles could not be put under the end. At the same time, other actors, such as the European Union and the United States, have imposed a series of sanctions aimed at tackling Russian aggression. Europe – and even the whole world – is at a crucial crossroads. If these committed are accepted, the language of revisionism will enter the political dialogue again, with incalculable possible consequences. “
Speaking about the role of the Council of Europe, he said that it is decisive: “The rise of populism, the spread of misinformation – often accelerated by abuse of emerging technologies – and the erosion of legislation that protects fundamental freedoms, are a threat to democracy. Indeed, democratic regression in various European countries is a reason for constant concern, which is regularly recorded and highlighted by the Council of Europe’s rapporteurs. “
He then emphasized: “The steadfast commitment of the Council of Europe to human rights, based on the European Convention on Human Rights, is reflected in the vital work of your committee. By promoting dialogue, raising awareness and discussion of political developments in all Member States, the Commission plays a decisive role in highlighting the challenges for democracy and the rule of law. Through political supervision and parliamentary diplomacy, it helps to identify emerging risks that may undermine compliance with the contract and the fundamental freedoms it guarantees.
We have to remember. Gaza, Sudan, Libya and other areas do not belong to Europe. However, respect for ecumenical human rights is our responsibility, no matter where the violations take place. Not only because we may be confronted with the consequences of such violations on our external borders, but mainly because Europe must defend universal humanity. Concessions to fundamental human rights are unacceptable to us.
Greece, as an ancient cradle of the Republic and a member of the Council of Europe since 1949, remains consistently committed to the values and standards that this organization is advocating and promoting. In the midst of successive crises, geopolitical complexity and contemporary challenges, my country continues to work systematically for a democratic Europe, a model that is a model for human rights and the rule of law. These principles are essential prerequisites for a Europe with a strong and principle -based presence on the international stage.
I am appealing to you today: Let’s remain united. Under the present adverse conditions, each of us can do little on its own for world peace and prosperity. But together we can do miracles. As Aristotle said, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” That’s what we are. “
