“It is not just enough to express our regret or ask Israel to stop his business. The Council of Europe must request that sanctions be imposed, “Alexis Tsipras said
The imposition of sanctions against Israel for the war operations in Gaza Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is calling for his intervention.
“There are no words when we talk about tens of thousands of dead citizens, thousands of dead children and much more who die of illness or starve,” SYRIZA MP Pleos said, adding:
“It is not just enough to express our regret or ask Israel to stop his business. The Council of Europe must request that sanctions be imposed on Israel. If we do not do the same for Russia in the war in Ukraine, we show the world that Europe has two meters and two weights and has learned nothing of its mistakes. How can we talk about international law or values again, if we do not clearly state today that sanctions should be imposed on the Israeli government, especially in relation to military equipment, until it stops its military operations? “
The whole intervention of Alexis Tsipras At the meeting of the Council of Europe Political Committee held in Chania:
There are no words when we talk about tens of thousands of dead citizens, thousands of dead children and many more who die of illness or starving.
What we see today in Gaza far exceeds any self -defense of Hamas’ terrorist attacks or the absolutely correct demand for hostage release – which must be done immediately.
Therefore, I think it is not enough to simply express our regret or ask Israel to stop his business.
We must strongly condemn these acts. And, at the same time, the Council of Europe must request that sanctions be imposed on Israel.
I suggested it just a year ago, to the Political Committee in Oslo and I think it is now more necessary than ever. And we hear many European officials and European countries already express it.
It is unacceptable to say that the Council of Europe cannot do more in Gaza because it does not have an army.
We do not have an army, however, rightly, we have supported sanctions in Russia.
If we do not do the same in the case of Israel, we show the world that Europe has two meters and two weights and has learned nothing of its mistakes.
If we do not ask for extraordinary measures against Israel, our European values are not really values and we lose our credibility even more around the world.
How can we talk about international law or values again, if we do not clearly state today that sanctions on the Israeli government should be imposed, especially in relation to military equipment, until it stops its military operations and allow the full access of humanitarian aid to Gaza?
Therefore, I believe that any reference to the Middle East and a relative announcement of our parliamentary assembly should be clear on the issue of sanctions. And this is certainly concerned with the Declaration of Crete.
