Letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Arab Republic of Egypt Dr. Hanafy Ali Gebaly, in which he exposes his views, both on the legal and the property of the Holy Catherine of Sinai, was sent yesterday by the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis.
Mr Kaklamanis stresses that for Greece and internationally, the legal status of the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine is primarily treated as a matter of international law, as it arises from the provisions of the 1972 UNESCO Convention on World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
Convention, in which 191 UN Member States have joined Egypt- and has excessive formal validity in relation to the provisions of the laws of the states, which have made it part of their legal order.
Something that means that Egypt cannot oppose anyone- therefore to Greece- its internal law and judicial decisions that apply it, allegedly, inability to apply it in practice.
In conclusion, the letter states that: ‘Beyond and out of any opposite arrangement or judicial decision of the internal law, Egypt, under the 1972 UNESCO Convention in which it joined, has an international obligation, on the one hand, to fully respect the character and active functioning of the Holy See of Saint Catherine of Sinai Center. Everything, however, in its 2002 and earlier assets in 2002. “
In the epilogue of the letter, the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament emphasizes the expectation and belief – as it is based on the timeless excellent inter -parliamentary and not only – relations of the two countries, that the House of Arab Republic of Egypt “It will face, in the context of its responsibilities, it is well -known for our fair demand for the Primary International Law Protection of the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai.“
