Financing projects and infrastructure in the ports of the Aegean and Ionian Islands, where ferry ships face objective difficulties of approaching extreme weather conditions, New Democracy MEP George Autia is asking for an urgent question to the European Commission.
In his question, G. Autias emphasizes the following:
“The Aegean and Ionian islands are exposed for many months of the year, in extreme weather and in many cases ferry vessels face objective difficulties of approaching. In particular, during the winter months the situation is particularly difficult and often extremely dangerous due to strong winds.
Indicatively, the port of Karlovassi on the island of Samos, as experts point out, is unprotected by strong north winds with incomplete extensions that took place many years ago. It is estimated by experts that it is extremely necessary to fund it for the construction of two internal reflections that will protect the port of the port and allow for comfortable mooring of the vessels.
In the Marathokampos Gulf in Samos, the southern winds cause major problems in the port operation, as well as serious corrosion problems. There are many cases of ports in most Aegean islands, which need immediate funding.
Similar problems also face the ports in the Ionian Sea, such as Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefalonia.
Based on this data the European Commission is asked:
1. Do you intend to fund projects in the ports of the islands, which are a regional development factor, so that they are completely functional even in extreme weather events?
2. Is there a forecast of upgrading port infrastructure so that they are more durable? “
