Greece’s strong condemnation of the deadly bomb attack on the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elias in Damascus was expressed by the Foreign Ministry, describing the energy as “heinously terrorist attack”.

In its official announcement, the Foreign Ministry stressed that religious sites should never be goals of violence and terrorism and called on Syria’s transitional authorities to take action to attribute responsibility to those responsible, as well as to take measures to protect Christian and other religious communities.

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis is expected to inform his European counterparts tomorrow to the EU Foreign Affairs Council, stressing the importance of protecting religious freedom and peaceful coexistence.

The Foreign Ministry’s announcement:

“We strongly condemn the heinous terrorist bomb suicide attack on the Greek Orthodox Church of Maria in Damascus, Syria.

Religious spaces should never be targets of terrorism. Everyone has the right to exercise their faith with absolute peace and security. We demand from the Syrian transitional authorities to take immediate action to attribute responsibility to those involved and to implement measures that will guarantee the security of Christian communities and all religious groups, allowing them to live without fear.

We express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims.
