SYRIZA expressed his strong condemnation of the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elias in Damascus in Damascus in a statement, calling for immediate action by the Greek government and the EU.

“We express our sincere condolences to the families and the families of the victims. We remind you that we had warned since March 2025 that the targeting of religious communities by jihadist organizations exercising power in Syria contradicts the transition to the democratic normalcy that Syria needs, but also with peace and stability. Islamic organizations in power, without actually guaranteed the democratic transition and normalcy in the country, thus leaving the Syrian religious communities exposed to national minorities.

The Greek Government must take immediate initiatives at international and European level as a member of the UN Security Council and put the Syrian regime in front of its responsibilities, demanding the total reinstatement of sanctions until Syrian’s practical compliance with international law and human rights.

At the same time, along with other partners, it should push the EU to activate in the region with tangible initiatives, such as the convening of multilateral EU -Eastern Mediterranean Heads Conference on Peace in the Middle East and the Democratic Transition to Syria. “
