In his urgent question to the European Commission, New Democracy MEP G. Eutia calls for the Commission’s immediate intervention to intervene in Chios, tested by fires at the start of the summer.
Specifically, in his question, G. Autias emphasizes:
From Sunday afternoon, June 22, 2025, three fires have erupted in Chios and spread throughout the island due to strong winds. In the last few hours, despite the brave efforts of the Fire Department, the fires are rekindled, with 17 settlements being evacuated for security reasons and many areas of the island have no electricity and access to basic goods. According to a statement by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the last 48 hours in Greece, the fire forces were called upon to face 110 fires in various parts of the country.
Based on this data the European Commission is asked:
1) Will the European Solidarity Fund be activated to compensate those affected by the fires?
2) Does it intend to finance the establishment of a European Fire Brigade with the aim of assisting Mediterranean countries affected by fires?
3) Does it intend to provide more resources to Member States in order to acquire means and staff to prevent and extinguish fires?
4) Will the affected fires be compensated within 12 weeks, as the Cohesion Commissioner recently announced in response to my question?
