Foreign Minister in Ankara: Lausanne Treaty does not provide for election of muftis

“The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs is always willing to send to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs the text of the Treaty of Lausanne with the warm request to indicate to Greece the article, which states that the muftis of the Muslim Minority are elected.

“As you know, there is no relevant provision in the Treaty of Lausanne,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The announcement responds to a provocative post Mevlüt Tsavousoglu in the twitter, who noted that “Respect for the elected minority muftis is a condition of the Lausanne Treaty.”
