The reform of the Code of Public Maritime Law was announced by the Minister of Maritime and Island Policy, Vassilis Kikiliasat the 11th International Congress of Maritime Law organized by the Piraeus Bar Association at the Eugenides Foundation, while expressing the belief that the findings of the conference work will be a useful guide for the University and Maritime Community.

In this context, he thanked the President of the Conference Coordination Committee, Professor Lia Athanasiou and congratulated her great contribution to the flagship task of reforming the Code of Private Maritime Law, stressing that “We aspire to continue this legislative work with corresponding key areas, such as the Code of Public Maritime Law. We look forward to your subscription and your participation. “

Subsequently, the minister underlined the importance of the conference, describing it as a renowned institution that highlights Piraeus in a center of scientific dialogue, maritime knowledge and international cooperation. “This year’s theme for the dangers of the maritime mission is not theoretical, but practical, direct and important for both our country and for the planet”he stressed.

He then highlighted the challenges facing the industry, from the green transition and the ESG criteria to the geopolitical turbines and safety on sea streets. “These are issues of the future of shipping, which are reflected in the real economy, in Greek and world seagoing shipping,” reminded, adding that “20% of world shipping is represented by the Greek seagoing.”

Finally, Mr. Kikilias pointed out that Greece, due to its naval tradition and primacy it holds in the world fleet, “It has a historical responsibility to ensure an institutional framework that meets the real needs of shipping businesses and to enhance the competitiveness of the Greek -owned fleet and the role of our country.”
