His own conditions (6+1) for her national strategy of the country regarding the latest geopolitical developments, presents the Alexis Tsipras in article of which is published today Wednesday at Kathimerini newspaper.
The former prime minister also puts the USA in the frame, where with the re-election of President Trump, as he says, they choose the law of the strong and the adoption of a large part of the cynical values of the most powerful authoritarian regimes. “This development is not only positive for our country, which has based its national strategy on the validity of International Law.”
6+1 conditions of national strategy
The central message of Alexis Tsipras’ article is the finding that shielding the country against new crises and challenges is today more imperative than ever. The former prime minister emphasizes the need to form a new national compass, based on an energetic and multidimensional foreign policy.
Indicatively, it refers to Greek-Turkish relationsrecalling that he had supported in December 2024 the talks between the foreign ministers of Greece and Turkey for an appeal to The Hague regarding the continental shelf and the EEZ. On the contrary, as he notes, the prime minister “buried” this process.
Commenting on the recent proclamation of Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the convening of the Eastern Mediterranean conference, Mr. Tsipras believes that the initiative did not come from him, but from the American government. Nevertheless, he clarifies that, under certain conditions, the proposal could prove useful — as long as there is a clear definition of Greece’s “red lines” vis-à -vis the US.
He warns, however, that without proper preparation the initiative may turn out to be dangerous for national interests, and proposes 6+1 basic conditions:
- Coordination with the Republic of Cyprus should be at the core of the strategy.
- There should be European participation in the conference.
- Athens to seek to link the revised EU-Turkey Customs Agreement with the deposit of a co-signatory in The Hague.
- To reactivate the Tsipras proposal of 2022 for the delimitation of the EEZ and continental shelf with the neighboring countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and to link it with the extension of Greek territorial waters to 12 nautical miles in areas such as southern and eastern Crete and Kastellorizo.
- There should be Greek planning for coordinated bilateral demarcations and, if necessary, parallel appeals to the International Court of Justice. The former prime minister draws attention to the danger of Ankara and Tripoli sticking to the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum.
- To include in the conference Benghazi representation from Libya.
Concluding his article in Kathimerini, Alexis Tsipras underlines that there is no room for communication moves or petty party calculations, warning that the government’s manipulations and the absence of a strategic compass can lead the country “to the rocks”. It ends, finally, with the call “even now” to do everything necessary to avoid this eventuality.
