Mitsotakis with the Commissioner for Energy: Accuracy in focus – “The Commission to go one or two steps further”

by

The difficulties faced by households across Europe increase in energy prices were at the center of the meeting of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with the EU Energy Commissioner. Kadri Simson, at the Maximos Palace.

In view of the proposals that the European Commission is expected to submit in May, the Prime Minister pointed out that he expects “the Commission – which has played a very active role in preparing a very useful toolbox – to go one or two steps further in terms of state support – members.

“Because no member state alone can deal with this crisis, this is certainly true in the case of a country like Greece, which is committed to a course of fiscal sustainability, because we are still suffering from the legacy of a ten-year crisis.”

“It is unsustainable to impose this burden on our citizens, especially when we talk about gas prices that do not reflect the fundamental principles of supply and demand. Nothing has changed in essence, but prices have increased fivefold, sixfold, tenfold in some circumstances. I therefore believe that all options should be put on the table, including a possible ceiling on the price of gas. And, of course, we must find a way to quickly disconnect the prices of natural gas from the prices of electricity “, stressed Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

“Greece clearly has the potential to be a major force in the field of renewable energy sources, to act as an entry point for gas from the Eastern Mediterranean, either through pipelines, the EastMed project, or in the short term through liquefied natural gas (LNG). ). We talk to everyone involved.

And of course we want to move forward by strengthening the connections. As you know, the Greece-Egypt electricity interconnection is a project which – in my opinion – should have the support of Europe, but also through the REPowerEU tool.

“I believe that there are other projects that will be of great importance for the whole of Europe, which could be co-financed and started very quickly,” said the Prime Minister during the discussion on the challenge of Europe’s energy security.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, the Director of the Diplomatic Office of the Prime Minister Anna-Maria Boura and the Deputy Government Spokeswoman, Aristotle Peloni.
