SYRIZA Conference: “Umbrella” reacts to the constitutional changes

by

By Antonis Anzoletos

15 executives of “Umbrella” submitted a proposal proposed by the president and the Central Committee of SYRIZA to be elected by the Congress – as has been the case so far – and not to pass the statutory changes for their election by the members as requested by Alexis Tsipras.

Signed by: D. Vitsas, N. Voutsis, T. Dritsas, E. Kalamara, K. Knitou, P. Lambrou, A. Xanthos, D. Papadimoulis, M. Sampatakakis, R. Svigkou, P. Lambrou, P. Skourletis , E. Tsakalotos, N. Filis and T. Christodoulopoulou.

They report features:

“With this note, the signatories submit our proposal for the provisions of the party’s Articles of Association, which defines the manner of electing the President and the members of the Central Committee. Our proposal, a product of thought and cooperation in a spirit of camaraderie, aims to describe an open, unifying, participatory and democratic process. It seeks to give the process the following advantages:

Firstly, it clearly states what is the fundamental organ of the Party, from which not only the President and the Central Committee are elected, but more importantly, to which these two bodies are accountable: the Congress. The aim here is to have an institution that is strong and resilient on the one hand, and sufficiently open and participatory on the other, both for the election and for accountability. The central idea is that participatory democracy makes sense when exercised on a framework that supports party function and provides institutional counterweights.

Secondly, it confirms the central position of the Party for practical gender equality through the 50% quota in the Central Committee.

Thirdly, it ensures the equality of the votes of all the delegates. Everyone votes for all members of the Central Committee. It also ensures proportionality in the representation of all regions in the Central Committee based on the number of members, avoiding the over-representation of some regions and consequently the under-representation of others “.

Filis: Let us not proceed to a strategic transformation of our political subject

The signatory Nikos Filis on this issue stated from the podium of the Conference: “Let us not proceed to a strategic transformation of our political subject led by the leadership, the liquidation of our party formation and an unbridled multiplicity, which bows deeply to government and power as an end in itself.”

On his side President of SYRIZA and the majority was George Katrougalos: “The big bet is to be able to match the electoral influence of our party – which bad lies largely due to the unmediated relationship of Alexis Tsipras with the electorate – with the corresponding increase in our organizational influence. The proposal for direct election of both the Central Committee and the president by all the members is in this direction “.

The vote will take place tomorrow night.
