Question by Androulakis to the Commission about the vandalism in Agia Sofia

by

The president of PASOK-Movement for Change submitted a question to the European Commission after the vandalism at the Imperial Gate of Hagia Sophia, asking for initiatives to be taken to protect the World Heritage Site and Symbol of Orthodoxy.

“These catastrophes raise reasonable questions for the protection of this historic monument, which has been the center of Orthodox Christians for many years, and the preservation of its special cultural character is an obligation of Turkey,” said Mr. Androulakis.

The text of the question of Mr. Androulakis in detail

“Two years after the conversion of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, a World Heritage Site according to UNESCO from a Museum to a Mosque, the vandalism of the imposing Imperial Gate of the Monument dating from the 6th century AD. are unacceptable and cause the disgust of all humanity.

“These catastrophes raise reasonable questions about the protection of this historic monument which has been the center of Orthodox Christians for many years, and the preservation of its special cultural character is an obligation of Turkey.

With all this in mind, can the European Commission:

– How can it force Turkey to honor its international obligations regarding the protection and status of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul?
“What initiatives does it intend to take, possibly in cooperation with Unesco, to strengthen the protection of Hagia Sophia and to repair the damage caused?”
