Dendias in quadrilaterals: Threats and breaches of sovereignty of other states are not a basis for cooperation

The Foreign Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus, the Hellenic Republic, the State of Israel and the United States issued a joint statement following their earlier teleconference to reaffirm their common commitment to promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean.

At a critical time for Europe, the United States and the world, Ministers reaffirmed their commitment in the figure 3 + 1 and decided to intensify the their cooperation in the fields of energy, economy, climate action, emergency preparedness and the fight against terrorism; contributing to sustainability, energy security and interconnection in the region.

The 3 + 1 Ministers support additional initiatives, such as the Ministerial Meeting in the Negev Desert, which promote co-operation in the region.

In addition, they condemned the recent ones horrific terrorist attacks against Israelisincluding the May 5 terrorist attack on Elad, and decided to draw up a roadmap with specific goals for next year and prepare the ground for a next meeting before the end of 2022.

According to diplomatic sources, in the intervention of o Nikos Dendias stressed the importance of today’s meeting, emphasizing the common values, but also the commitment of all participants in the security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

He referred to the areas cooperationnoting that following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Energy security, as well as the diversification of energy sources, is becoming even more imperative.

In this context he referred to construction of the floating natural gas station in Alexandroupoliswhich the Prime Minister inaugurated a few days ago, the existing station in Revythousa and the IGB interconnector, which is expected to be put into operation in a few months.

Special mention was made of power supply cablewhich will connect Israel with Cyprus and Greece (Euro-Asia Interconnector), as well as the pipeline EastMed.

He also referred to nuclear power plant under construction from the Russian company Rosatomin Akkuyu, a highly seismic region of Turkey, underlining the concern of Greece, a concern which he has already conveyed to the Director General of the Atomic Energy Agency.

Nikos Dendias underlined that Multilateral cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean can be a catalyst for consolidating peace and security in the area.

He repeated that Greece’s firm position is that multilateral cooperation schemes, such as the East Med Gas Forum, are open to other countries in the region.

Provided that the participating States will respect international law, such as the Law of the Sea, and of course the Charter of the United Nations, which expressly prohibits the threat or use of force.

In this context, the threat of use of force, revisionism, persistent violations of the sovereignty of other states, can not be a basis for regional cooperation.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also referred to the other areas of cooperation in the 3 + 1 framework, such as civil protection, dealing with natural disasters, cybersecurity, where there is already cooperation between Greece, Cyprus and Israel, as well as dealing with its consequences. climate change.

It is noted that Greece, along with the United Statesis developing a specific initiative in the field of climate change and the protection of the seas.

Finally, the Foreign Minister referred to the need to strengthen the 3 + 1 dialogue through a top-down process.

In this context, he proposed the strengthening of the inter-parliamentary dialogue, emphasizing that the relevant Greek parliamentary group has already been set up and includes three former Foreign Ministers.

He also suggested that, prior to the forthcoming Ministerial Meeting of the 3 + 1 Figure, which is expected to take place, with a physical presence, in the autumn, be preceded by a meeting of the General Secretaries of the four Foreign Ministries.

It is noted in this case that tomorrow, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Themistoklis Demiris will receive in Athens his counterparts from Cyprus Cornelius Cornelius and Israel Alon Ushpiz.

All the participating Foreign Ministers underlined their common commitment to the continuation and deepening of the 3 + 1 figure and stressed the need to accelerate cooperation, in order to present tangible results at their next meeting.
