Sasha Jane Lowerson is the first trans surfer to compete in surfing

by

Sasha Jane, 43, is the first trans surfer to participate in a surfing championship. Lowerson won the two categories she competed in: ‘Women’s Open’ and ‘Open Logger’. The event took place on the 19th in Avalon, Western Australia. Sasha had already won the same event three years ago, when she had not yet gone through the gender transition.

Lowerson has been a strong voice in the fight for the rights of trans athletes in sporting events, especially surfing, a sport he has practiced since he was a child.

Before making the transition, Sasha won significant titles in the category such as the state champion of Western Australia, at the time competing as Ryan Egan.

To The Australian newspaper, Sasha says that she suffered a lot during the years she stayed away from surfing and especially from competitions due to the gender transition.

“I started surfing when I was a kid and I was a good junior surfer. I knew from a very young age that I was no ordinary boy.” account Sasha.

“For a lot of my life I thought she (Sasha) could never exist, so I had to hide inside a ‘box,’” he says.

“From time to time I thought about killing myself. Until I actually attempted suicide. So I thought: what are you doing with your life?”, reports the surfer who felt she was living a lie.

Sasha says that she decided that she would be honest with herself and with the world, that’s when she chose to transition and started her hormone therapy.

“I couldn’t just walk away from my passion”, he concludes.

Sasha told the newspaper that she has already started a dialogue with the World Surfing League, the WSL.
