Women’s soccer team to have its own stadium in the US – The World is a Ball

by

Women have been gaining, day by day, more space and recognition in football in some parts of the world.

Championships started to be more valued, both by top hats and by the media and public, salaries started to be better, as well as the structural conditions for the practice of the sport.

The Women’s World Cup is already a famous event, which arouses high interest in football fans – other competitions still need more popularity, which could perhaps be achieved via marketing.

One of the most significant advances for the football played by them, which shows how much it is valued in a certain square, took place this week in the USA.

A franchise with just ten months of existence, the Kansas City NWSL, a member of the National Women’s Soccer League (the elite division of women’s football in the US), has announced that it will build an arena dedicated exclusively to the team’s activities.

According to the team’s owners, businessmen Angie Long, Chris Long and Brittany Matthews, the funds for the construction of the stadium, whose name is yet to be revealed, will come from the private sector.

The estimated cost of the project is US$70 million (R$395 million). The arena will be located in the Berkley Riverfront region, close to the Missouri River.

“As a sports fan and dad, I’m very proud that Kansas City will make history by having a world-class facility dedicated to women sportsmen and that the project will be a centerpiece of our beautiful riverside rebuild,” said Quinton Lucas , mayor of Kansas City.

“We believe this significant investment and commitment will shape a stronger future for our entire region and our athletes,” said Chris Long, who is married to Angie.

As far as we know, the creation of an arena for the exclusive use of a women’s team is unprecedented, which makes Kansas City a strong candidate to become the capital of women’s football in the USA.

In Brazil, Manaus and Araraquara already held this status.

In 2017, an El País report was entitled “Manaus, the capital of women’s football in Brazil.

The text reported that Iranduba, a club based in the metropolitan region of the Amazonian capital, took 25,371 fans to a match against Santos, in the semifinals of the Brazilian Championship, at Arena da Amazônia, then record attendance in the history of the competition.

In 2019, it was the turn of the city in the interior of São Paulo to become the center of attention.

Railway won the Brazilian Nationals, being the first club twice champion of the main national tournament, and still had outstanding performances from its young soccer players.

“In addition to the success of the professional team, the Araraquarense team also reveals talents with its youth categories, in addition to taking advantage of girls who have emerged in the city’s Sports Schools”, wrote the local newspaper O Imparcial.

The Kansas City NWSL currently play at Legends Field, which is also home to the Kansas City Monarchs men’s baseball team.

Thus, the arena needs to be constantly adapted to the dimensions and characteristics of each sport.

In addition to the stadium, which should be completed in 2024, Kansas City NWSL will have a new training center, to be built at a cost of US$15 million (BRL 85 million) in the city of Riverside, about 10 km away from distance.

The team, hoping to build a great structure, has the same expectation with regard to sporting performance, poor so far.

In its rookie season, it occupies the tenth and last place in the NWSL championship, with three wins, seven draws and 13 losses, and has no chance of qualifying for the decisive phase.
