Opinion – Juca Kfouri: Champions League decision showed why football is the most popular sport in the world

My first memory is of the decision of the 4th Centenary Championship of São Paulo, in February 1955, on the eve of my fifth birthday.

I can’t say whether I fell more in love with Corinthians, my father’s team, or with football there, although I suspect that the first alternative prevails.

I’m sure that the passing of the years has consolidated the passion for football.

Because Liverpool and Real Madrid paid tribute to him, despite the unbelievable confusion that delayed the start of the Champions League decision by 37 minutes, something to shame Uefa and the French authorities.

The first half was all red because the Merengues accepted the English superiority. If it weren’t for Belgian goalkeeper Courtois and the bar, Liverpool would have come out ahead.

It’s inescapable: Real Madrid love to live dangerously.

Jürgen Klopp wanted the Beatles, Carlo Ancelotti played bolero.

Then, in the 59th minute, Vinicius Junior appeared behind Arnold’s back and took advantage of a cross kick to make it 1-0.

From then on, Courtois made saves that perhaps not even he can explain how he made them, and agony took over the decision to prevent Liverpool’s best football from prevailing in, say, exquisitely loyal play.

Knowing how to defend also makes football the best invention of humanity.

No Argentine team has fallen in the group stage of Libertadores. The six remain in the round of 16, four in first place in their groups and one of the two that came in second, Vélez Sarsfield, surpassed by fellow countryman Estudiantes. Talleres was behind Flamengo.

River Plate, Boca Juniors, Estudiantes and Colón led.

Among the Brazilians, Palmeiras, Flamengo and Atlético Mineiro secured the first places, and Fortaleza, Athletico Paranaense and Corinthians took the second.

Bragantino and América were the last ones, eliminating the Brazilians with smaller fans.

The Palmeiras campaign is flawless and qualifies him as the biggest favorite, followed by River.

Our things, both Flamengo and Atlético Mineiro, although classified in the leadership, were booed.

Like Corinthians, which was on the brink of the abyss by only drawing miserably with the Bolivian reserves to get, in this case, a ridiculous second place.

The other two seconds, Fortaleza and Athletico, ended the phase with fair applause.

From now on, in the knockout stages, the bug catches.

What to expect from Brazilians in Libertadores?

Well, Palmeiras is still lucky in the draws, because it was the Paraguayan Cerro Porteño.

Atlético Mineiro, then, can complain even less about luck, because Ecuador’s Emelec is the weakest of the runners-up.

Athletico Paranaense and Fortaleza will have opponents against which there should be balance, respectively the Paraguayan Libertad and Estudiantes.

Hurricane and Libertad faced each other in the same group with a win for each side as home team.

And Castelão will weigh in favor of the people of Ceará as well as the stadium of La Plata for the Argentines.

Flamengo took on an indigestible opponent, the Colombian Tolima, who has a history against Brazilians, let’s say Corinthians, back there, and Galo, right now.

Finally, it will be up to Corinthians to re-edit the matches against Boca Juniors, a possibility that would have existed if they had ended the group stage in an inverted situation. It looks like karma.
